Buletin Akademik: Andropause

Assalamualaikum dan salam sejahtera

Andropause

The Andropause is the time in a man's life when the hormones naturally start decline usually during their late forties or early fifties. This decline continues into the eighties. Many have questioned whether the male menopause is more myth than reality. However, like women undergoing menopause, the decline in hormones in men result in them suffering from symptoms of the Andropause. However, like the menopause, symptoms of Andropause can vary from person to person.

Between the ages of 50 to 70, some men report symptoms such as erectile dysfunction (failure to achieve an erection), general tiredness, mood changes, night sweats and sometimes palpitations. Most men attribute erectile dysfunction to be the most significant event of the Andropause. Apart from erectile dysfunction, mood changes can take place too. Some patients of might have complained of nervousness, irritability and even depression. Other patients undergoing andropausal changes report the feelings of wanting to be closer to family and friends. Men often focus too intently on their career, money and power in their earlier life, often neglecting family and friends. In the andropausal years, men and take on a more "maternal" role, as if transitioning to become more motherly than fatherly. They become more concerned about their friends and family, as if regretting their former attitudes. It is interesting that many patients do not sense these changes in themselves, but rather it is women that notice this and tell that he is undergoing "the menopause"!

In andropausal men, night sweats and palpitations occur because of an overactive autonomic system in response to falling testosterone levels. To assess for hypogonadism, which is in part the clinical basis of the Andropause, the doctor will check for physical signs in men including hair loss particularly in the armpit and genitalia. Psychological tests may be carried out to rule out depression and other mood and cognitive changes.

Throughout the life of a male there are several psychological issues that he struggles with, and these challenges are often amplified during the time of the Andropause: -

1. His sexuality
2. His emotions
3. His mind
4. His courage
5. His productivity
6. His personality
7. His character
8. His boyish behaviors

In the andropausal years the mind becomes less sharp and nimble. The older male becomes less swift in mental calculations and his judgment is not as accurate as before. In more severe cases, the memory gets impaired too, and with time, dementia may even set in.The andropausal man may relive his childhood days, often to the amazement of his partner or spouse! The mischief may be an extramarital affair, a new red sports car, a sudden passion for toy train sets, riding a bicycle, which he hadn't done for years, and so on. Sometimes of these childish acts may even be mistaken for Alzheimer's dementia!

The Andropause is beginning to be accepted as part of aging. Coping strategies are important. Hormonal therapy for the symptomatic is available today but has to be carefully supervised by a physician.

Sekian.

Hormones and love

Do you know why you feel so euphoric when you’re in love? Why you feel happiness when you’re with your love? Do you know what happens in your body and how you can influence this all? At least six hormones that are involved with love.

Dopamine : Did you know that when you’re in love, dopamine gives you the same feeling as when you would use cocaine? Every time you see your love, you get a shot of dopamine and it’s addictive. Everyone who has been in love knows they wanted to see the one they were in love with again and again and again. But when you’re in a relationship for a longer period, let’s say about two years; your body doesn’t produce that much dopamine anymore. The feeling of being in love slowly changed in loving him or her.Get enough vitamin B6 and magnesium. Those two together make your body produce dopamine. So make sure you get enough.

Fenylethylamine :It is produced in your brain. Your heartbeat is increasing, you start to breath faster, and the palms of your hands start to sweat, your cheeks and genitals get an extra blood flow and you start to feel happier. When you eat a lot of cheese and chocolates and drink plenty of red wine, maybe your brain gets some extra Fenylethylamine. (Besides the fact you’ll probably get nauseous.) Most of this gets decomposed in your intestines. When you have eye contact your brain also produces Fenylethylamine. The pupils of your eyes get bigger. But only when you see something you like. On the other hand, when you get the fright of your life, your brains starts producing this hormone too.

Adrenaline : Who hasn’t heard of it? The hormone that makes people run or fight. But when you’re in love adrenaline causes the reaction that you’re on standby all the way. Your pupils get bigger, your heart rate goes up, your breathing gets faster and you’re not so hungry because your digestive system starts to work slower. If you want to let the adrenaline flow, get really angry, get into a situation where you get really scared, or get some real physical exertion at the gym or maybe even at home with your loved one.But be careful when you have a bad heart because in that case too much adrenaline can get you into trouble.

Endorphin : It is the morphine that your own body produces when you feel pain. When you’re in love it has the same effects as heroine and opium which cause you to feel more happy and joyful. Eating fat, chocolate and sugars make you produce more endorphin.

Vasopressin : It works for men in the same way as oxytocine does for women. It’s said that this hormone makes people monogamous. If you want enough of this hormone, you'd better drink no alcohol. Alcohol is a restraining factor for the production of Vasopressin. When a man ejaculates there is a large amount of this hormone made by the hypothalamus and released in the blood stream. Vasopressin is also an antidiuretic hormone.

Oxytocin : is also called the mother hormone or cuddle hormone because when a mom breastfeeds her baby, this hormone is produced in large quantities. When you hug or caress this hormone is produced too. It makes you feel connected, takes away fear and makes you feel confident.

GIT module

Assalamualaikum dan Salam Sejahtera...

Alhamdulillah kita telah tamat kuliah untuk module GIT

Di sini disampaikan artikel mengenai module ini dan diharapkan dapatlah kita mengambil manfaat darinya

What is the differences between gastroenteritis and food poisoning?

Specifically, gastroenteritis refers to infection/inflammation of the
mucous membrane of the digestive tract, while food poisoning refers to
a type of bacterial gastroenteritis that was caused by something the
patient ate. Food poisoning can also refer to chemical food poisoning,
as might happen if you ate a poisonous mushroom. In broad terms,
gastroenteritis describes what the patient has, while food poisoning
describes how the patient got it.

According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary, gastroenteritis is the "Inflammation of the mucous membrane of both stomach and intestine" , while food poisoning is "poisoning in which the active agent is contained in ingested food".
